On Wednesday, January 18, 2006, Muslims attacked Christians of Odysat village, Luxor Province, while praying. Several thousands of Muslims came with metal chains, swords, knives, sticks and axes to the predominantly Christian area of the village. Before approaching the area, Muslims cut off electricity from the entire region. Muslims killed Kamal Shakir and Gerges Shehata, a child. They injured hundreds. Muslims tried to burn St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church. They looted, destroyed and burned many houses and businesses owned by Christians.
